"Art, like life, is an extension of ourselves, coupled with the inherent and infinite possibility of what we could be."
Jim Lawn is an Irish artist and a native of the historic costal town of Dungarvan, County Waterford, Ireland. After spending several years qualifying as a glass cutter and working in the Dungarvan division of Waterford Crystal Ltd, Jim took his first steps as an professional artist in 1980 by entering the Crawford Municipal College of Art, Cork.
For his work at Crawford College he received a number of awards. Namely, First Penn Chemical Award and joint exhibition with Cork Arts Society, Student of the Year Award. Furthermore, his work was noted by one of Irelands most prestigious galleries The Solomon Gallery where he later successfully exhibited. At the National College of Art and Design, Dublin he attained a B.A. in fine art.
Throughout his career he has exhibited at home and abroad and received both public and private acclaim. His work has been showcased on Irish national television and the BBC. Now, through his latest collection Jim has linked the traditional and contemporary skills of the artist’s craft to creatively produce a number of highly collectable and limited edition original prints/posters.
My most recent work follows the thread of Spanish artist "MIRO" and his opinion that art best serves the people in print format. The nature of this new work as seen in Gallery 4 employs both the traditional skills of the artist (with paint, brush and canvas) along with the more contemporary artistry of digital photography and the computer.
The result of all this creative process is an image that has evolved from its origin with its own identity in colour, mood and feeling. It is my belief that art should evoke and evolve an understanding of the varying ways we communicate in expressing our thoughts and feelings using both traditional and contemporary mediums. What lies between the viewer and the image is as important in understanding of who is in effect doing the viewing?
